Organization Description:
Originally an all-volunteer operation reliant on donations of food from local residents, Cathedral Kitchen (CK) has grown since its 1976 beginnings into a highly organized service center that today is the largest emergency meal provider in Camden, NJ. With a mission to use food to change lives, CK aims to mitigate the harms of poverty and food insecurity through a robust meal program that services more than 122,000 meals annually, free health and dental care, a culinary arts program that leads 86% of graduates to employment, and a social enterprise program that provides jobs, community awareness of the issues of hunger and poverty, and a sustaining revenue stream to their programming.

Launched in 2009, Cathedral Kitchen’s Culinary and Baking Arts Training program prepares students for employment in the food service industry through class work, hands-on kitchen training, and ServSafe instruction. A 17-week training program is offered twice each year to 30 students per session.
Addresses scarcity in Camden by serving up hope one plate at a time. Hot, nutritious meals, cooked on-site, are served in their dining room 6 days per week to approximately 300 people per meal. In addition to each sit-down meal service, each guest receives a take-home bag of food that includes sandwiches, fresh produce, and baked goods. Finally, they provide a Market Stand, stocked with fresh fruit, vegetables, breads, and pantry items where dinner guests can “shop” for free. CK also partners with multiple organizations to deliver meals to Camden residents who are unable to access their on-site meals.
