LUCY Outreach
Mission
We offer multi-lingual, culturally sensitive services to low-income Camden County youth and young adults, ages 7-25, and their families. We accept and welcome all to take part in educational, social, leadership and service-oriented programming. We empower youth to form healthy relationships, make good choices, and develop into compassionate and socially responsible adults who make a positive impact on their community.
We address all environmental systems that impact the youth- their home life, peers, schools, and neighborhood environment, with appropriate programs, community services, resources, and support.
Vision
LUCY Outreach was established to address the particular challenges and setbacks- teen delinquency, gang and drug recruitment and involvement, substance use disorder in the home, teen pregnancy, a struggling school system- faced by urban youth growing up in Camden, New Jersey. LUCY is growing rapidly, and we have big plans to build upon our mission to transform and inspire the lives of young people in the city of Camden. In 2021, we plan to break ground on the LUCY Center. It will be a new 10,000 square-foot, multi-purpose building that will be built adjacent to LUCY’s current home at 3201 Federal Street. The building will substantially expand LUCY’s capacity to serve youth, and dramatically increase the positive impact on the lives of Camden’s young people. Our fundraising will allow LUCY to increase program offerings, increase the number of youths served by 100%, and hire and train much-needed staff.
Programs We Are Involved With:
The LUCY Afterschool Program provides safe, structured and nurturing daily programming for Camden County youth, ages 10-16, from low-income families. The program boosts academic performance, reduces at-risk behaviors, and increases self-esteem and social/emotional skills.
- 8-week Summer Program for teens (ages 10-19), daily
- 8-week LUCY littles Camp (ages 7-11), Monday-Friday
- Service Immersion Trip Experiences (ages 14-19)
Summer offerings include: youth and staff-led clubs, local service days, evening programs, BBQ’s, weekly trips and overnights, STEM sessions, weekly outings and swimming days, Girl Scouts, art classes, sports, community panels, literacy and math support, cooking and baking classes, and
an annual trip to the US/Mexican Border to plan and run a children’s camp and learn about immigration, and Camp Bright Feathers – a camp for children infected and affected by AIDS/HIV and community violence.
